How will this workbook series fit into my band curriculum?

The Beginning Band Basics Theory/Activity Workbook Series is designed to complement the most popular Band Method books available today.  We do not endorse any particular method book and the Workbooks are not designed to replace a method book.  What we have found to be missing from most band programs and curricula is an instrumental theory book designed exclusively for the beginning instrumentalist.  As most band programs revolve around the group fundamental of the concert B flat scale, the Workbooks begin teaching notation for each instrument from concert B flat. This allows students to instantly grasp music reading, as it relates directly and immediately to how they are learning to play their new instrument.

Teachers will find the activity, composer and Italian terms pages an interesting and fun way to bring these musical elements into the Band class and increase students' musical awareness.  Research opportunities at the BandBasics.com website provide a wealth of information conveniently synthesized and organized for student projects and workbook requirements.

Preparation time for teachers is reduced, as all material is organized and 'ready made' for the classroom OR individual study. If the need arises to supply material while a teacher is absent, the Beginning Band Basics Workbooks are a lifesaver!

Why is there a different workbook for each instrument?

Each workbook teaches notation from the same starting point as performance - a beginning clarinetist will first learn to read middle C in the treble clef while a beginning trombonist will first learn to read B flat below middle C in the bass clef.  Both of these players, however, will learn to play 'concert B flat' as a mutual starting point for performance.  These workbooks eliminate the frustration of learning clefs and notation outside of the beginning instrumentalist's first experience. What they are 'looking at' while playing is the same as what they are 'looking at' in this theory workbook. You will be amazed at how quickly and easily students will learn, understand and enjoy their theory work with Beginning Band Basics!

Why are some instruments not represented in the series?

The following instruments do not have an individual workbook:

Baritone (Treble Clef), Eb Clarinet, Piccolo, Cornet, Soprano Saxophone and Auxiliary Percussion.  It is felt that, in the case of the non-percussion instruments, those mentioned above are not common enough in regular school band programs to warrant individual workbooks.  Students learning these instruments may certainly use another workbook in their respective key.  If a teacher would like a workbook in one of the above instruments, this can be requested from Oceanna Music Publications via email.  Send your request to:  workbooks@OceannaMusic.com  Auxiliary percussion students can benefit from using BOTH the bass and treble percussion books.

Is ALL the material in each book different?

No, there are pages that are common to each workbook.  The composer and Italian terms research pages are the same.  The activity pages (Musical Math, Alphabet Soup, etc.) pages are the same.  The rhythm pages contain the exact same information, but the treble instruments have their examples in the treble clef and similarly for the bass instruments.  In all the notation pages, the concepts being taught are the same, but presented in the notation and key structure unique to each instrument.

How do the books work together?

All pages are correlated together.  For example, pages titled: 'Notation 4' are on the exact same page numbers for each instrument.   A class of students could all be working on the same set of pages, each for their respective instrument.  This is highly successful in eliminating cheating and copying - or so we have been told by teachers!!

How do the students find the answers for the Composer and Italian terms pages?

All the research and answers for these pages can be accessed through our educational website:  www.BandBasics.com.  Students click on the 'student research' link located on the top navigation bar of the main page, or the left side bar of any other page.  This takes them to the Student Research Home Page, where they can click on the appropriate link for the page they are working on.  All material on these pages is 'right click protected',  meaning that students are unable to copy and paste any of the information!  They are welcome, of course, to use any of the information and pictures  for projects and presentations - but they may not directly plagiarize. Teachers and students wishing to use any of composer pictures may do so by emailing:  permissions@BandBasics.com  Please specify which picture you would like, and a copy will be emailed to you.

Can the workbooks benefit private music teachers not involved in a band program?

Of course!  As this is a theory/activity book and not a group ensemble method book, teachers may use any combination of  workbooks, or even a single workbook, in any way that is appropriate to their situation.

My teacher's budget is limited, and other theory methods I have used are less expensive.  Why are these workbooks worth more?

This is a great question that we are happy to answer.  Please note the following:

  • Books 1 and 2 are smaller workbooks at a much lower cost.
  • the workbooks are created in colour - which is more costly to produce, but we feel that colour is vital to the learning process.
  • the workbooks contain no 'filler', redundant or repetitious material so common to other theory methods.
  • the workbooks contain almost twice as many pages as the commonly used theory books, which actually makes them less costly.
  • each workbook contains an original composition highlighting the notation learned in the book.
  • the workbooks are supported by a free access educational website: www.bandbasics.com, where students can research all the information they need to complete various pages in the book.  This is an invaluable resource for teachers and students alike!
  • the workbooks are being listed as a resource in various school boards across the country.  Once listed, the workbooks belong to the textbook budget, which means that teachers may not have to find the extra funds.  Ask your school board Arts Consultant if the Beginning Band Basics Workbooks are  listed as a resource - if not, encourage them to add it to their list of available resources.
  • Books 1 and 2 are a smaller version of the Combined Edition Workbooks - these are perfect for teachers faced with a limited budget.
